In our “Games...” we set out to tell you, with tenderness, poetry and humour, about a comic encounter between a few people running away from themselves, to a place where nobody knows them and where they can be whoever they want, with no CV, no Facebook profile, no gossiping neighbours, no curious friends, no secret police file, no rear-view mirror of sins, no cannonballs of unpleasant memories chained to their ankles...
Between the smiles, a miniature tragedy also unfolds: a love that never gets the chance to be consummated, to mature, to burn all the way through, and which leaves behind a regret that it could have been good...
THE MORAL?!... We are mere balls on a billiard table, each a different colour, rolled about at random by the cue of life... We touch one another harder, more gently or not at all... We bang our heads against the cushions until we turn into cubes, wondering whether the meetings that never happened and the collisions that never took place might have sent us into the winning pockets of the green baize table...

Mihail Sebastian - Sketches for a Self-Portrait
Living and creating in times at least as troubled as those we live in today, Mihail Sebastian – as a theorist – wrote theatre reviews in which he declared himself an opponent of the “laws of theatre” of his day: “a few poor automatic formulas, a few self-evident truths, a few superstitions with the force of law: “gradual action”, “well-constructed plot”, “brisk dialogue”. In fact, all these so-called laws of theatre refer to a single type of play, the three-act comedy, written over a short distance, for two hours of performance, with a simple storyline, clear situations and – above all – stupid dialogue. It is a type of theatre made by breathless authors for an audience with no stamina.”
Paradoxically, his own work for the stage does not follow the models recommended by the theatre critic:
“Translating Topaze (by Marcel Pagnol, from French) I saw at close quarters what is called a great play, a sure success, an infallible construction. Topaze is a machine that will work at any time and will always, anywhere, bring people into the theatre. Rich material, dramatic abundance, precisely drawn types and above all a certain satirical vigour that hits home. No hesitation, nothing blurred, nothing vague. There is in my theatre an inclination towards the “delicate” that will absolutely forbid me a great success. As long as I play on the key of the “subtle”, I shall not win over the wider public. Coarseness is not necessarily needed, but dramatic vigour is indispensable... But can I stop being what I am? Can I deliberately achieve what I lack?... I keep falling into the sins of a man of letters... I wish I could treat theatre as an industry and produce a play with a perfect mechanism”...
The playwright’s self-portrait remained at the sketch stage – Mihail Sebastian was the pen name of Iosif Hechter, born in Brăila. In 1938 his first play, “Holiday Games” (Jocul de-a vacanța), was staged under this pen name. His second play, “The Star Without a Name” (Steaua fără nume), would not be staged until 1944, under another pen name, Victor Mincu. His last text, “The Last Hour” (Ultima oră), was staged posthumously, because on 20 May 1945, not yet 38, a lorry put an end to his all too short life, leaving an unfinished self-portrait...
