Julia Lambert is a celebrated actress. A witty, irresistible woman of real stature. She lives an enviable life: people adore her, her husband is a theatre director, she has everything. For Julia, though, all this is only play-acting. And she plays it with great talent. She sparkles her way through her own colourful, grand life, through roles and through men. Then the ageing diva falls in love with a young man almost the same age as her son. They begin an affair, and suddenly emotions, decisions and life itself are at stake. Jealousy, ageing, loneliness, the thirst for revenge and passion begin to rage within Julia. Just like in a good play. Maugham does not idealise her; he portrays Julia’s physical and inner life in depth, while we, almost without meaning to, find ourselves in the glittering, artificial world of the theatre. In Julia’s story the boundaries between life and theatre grow ever more blurred. It is hard to tell whether the play has become this true or life this false.
